Brakes – brakes are used on a bike to help slow you down and stop. There are two types of brakes, Disc brakes and calliper brakes. Disc brakes are used on mountain bikes and road bike however mountain bikes and downhill bikes will use a bigger disc to help with stopping power. A road bike and gravel bike often support a smaller disc as the stopping power of a downhill bike is not required, this, therefore, makes the set up lighter for the road rider. Calliper brakes are also widely used on the road and are set up with brake blocks. These wear out just like brake pads to ensure that you check the brakes regularly. Brakes blocks and brake pads wear out quick quickly in wet and dirty conditions.
