        Pedals
Pedals for bikes come in a huge variety of styles, functions and clip in systems. Riders choose their pedals based on the discipline they are taking part in and also the clip in system in which they choose or prefer. To name a few are Speedplay, Shimano and look systems. Mountain bike riders and some road riders use SPD pedals which are a little stronger and heavier and give you the ability to clip in from both sides. Downhill and freeride riders will vary in their pedal preference and there is a combination of flat pedal usage which means you are not clipped in and your foot is free at all times. The flat of the pedal are usually fitted with very small spikes or bolts to help secure the foot onto the pedal when riding over rough ground. Some riders will choose to be clipped in. Leisure riders and young children may also want to use flat pedals, these can be bought without spikes to suit the leisure rider.
        Clip in pedals
These are specifically designed pedals that work together with certain cleats which are fitted to the bottom of your shoe. Clip in pedals can have a variety of clip-in systems. The main purpose of using these systems is to give the rider a secure contact on the bike and to allow for greater power transfer. The system allows for the rider to pull up as well as push down and ‘draw circles’ on the bike for maximum performance. You can choose clip in pedal systems from LOOK, Shimano, Speedplay in both road and SPD mountain bike pedals and cleats.
        Flat pedals
Flat pedals are normally used for short leisure rides and mountain biking. Downhill mountain bikers and freeride cyclists like or need the freedom of being able to get the foot off the pedal. This could be to help balance themselves when on very rough terrain or if the riders is performing tricks and need to get their feet on and off of the pedals easily. Leisure riders also may like this freedom so they can stop and start easily without the hassle of having to clip in. Flat pedals come in a variety of designs, however, downhill mtb pedals are often designed with spikes on them to achieve more grip under foot.
        Cleats
Cleats are an accessory that bolts onto the bottom of your shoe to secure your feet into a pedal system. Clipping in and out of the system requires a technique which needs to be practised before heading out on the bike. The cleat is specific to the pedal so ensure you buy the right cleats for your pedal system.
